Discovery Beyond the Classroom
At Whatcom Hills, outside-the-classroom learning means more than the occasional field trip — it's woven into every grade, every year, enriched by the remarkable natural and cultural resources of the Pacific Northwest.
From exploring tide pools and mountain ecosystems to visiting museums, farms, theaters, and cultural and historical sites, students engage directly with what they're studying, turning abstract concepts into firsthand understanding. This hands-on discovery builds sharp curiosity, independent thinking, and a lasting sense of connection to the world around them.

Outdoor Programming
From Bellingham Bay to the North Cascades and beyond, we draw upon the rich landscapes of our region to bring learning to life. Forest trails, rocky shorelines, mountain peaks, and winding rivers become classrooms without walls, nurturing a deep sense of place and reverence for the natural world.
Through exploration and adventure, students learn to notice beauty and wonder while cultivating essential skills that carry forward into all areas of their lives. Trips include:
Hiking
Backpacking
Sailing
River Rafting
North Cascades Mountain School
What they develop:
Confidence to meet challenges with courage
Leadership and collaboration skills
Creative and thoughtful problem-solving abilities
A deep sense of environmental stewardship
Adaptability, resilience, and resourcefulness
Why Wilderness Adventures?
These experiences offer growth that simply can’t be replicated in a classroom—independence, resilience, and self-confidence as students meet challenges and discover strengths they didn't know they had.
Connection: facing challenges side by side builds trust, empathy, and lasting friendships.
Curriculum in motion: students observe geology, identify alpine plants, and apply weather and environmental science firsthand.
Unforgettable moments: a shooting star over a dark sky, cooling off in a mountain stream, or rappelling down a rock face with classmates cheering on from below become some of the most memorable and transformative moments of the middle school years.
