Grades 1-5
Foundations for lifelong learning
At Whatcom Hills, a vibrant elementary curriculum guides students into new academic skills while nurturing their curiosity, confidence, and love of learning.
In our elementary classrooms, lessons engage the whole child through the arts, movement, practical work, storytelling, and outdoor experiences, helping students build deep understanding and a meaningful connection to the world around them.
Immersive Main Lesson
Each morning begins with a focused two-hour main lesson in language arts, math, science, history or geography. Subjects unfold in three or four week blocks and come to life through storytelling, drawing, writing, drama, and hands-on work.
Class Teacher Continuity
Students are known deeply as individuals and a class community, held by a class teacher who typically remains with the same group of children for multiple years. This unique continuity fosters meaningful relationships and a whole-picture understanding of each child.
Specialty Subject Curriculum
Alongside core academic subjects, students explore music, Spanish, American Sign Language, handwork, gardening, woodworking, movement, and Eurythmy.

Prepared for Middle School
Across the lower grades at WHWS, students build strong academic foundations alongside a deep and enduring love of learning.
By the end of 5th grade, students have developed the habits of attention, perseverance, and creative problem-solving that prepare them for increased rigor:
Strong, engaged readers
A healthy homework rhythm — established, consistent study habits
In-depth research projects, complete with written, artistic, and oral presentation components
Together, these experiences cultivate the confidence, curiosity, and genuine enthusiasm for learning that students need to thrive in the more abstract, interdisciplinary studies of middle school.
