Awakening Ideals
The fifth grade curriculum helps students develop a broader perspective and critical thinking, along with the skills to navigate both their inner feeling world and the emerging world of intellectual objectivity. Studies of India, Persia, China, Mesopotamia, Egypt, Mesoamerica, and Greece introduce students to the achievements, beliefs, and enduring stories of ancient civilizations that shaped human history.
Geography expands across the North American continent, exploring regional topography and biomes, while botany builds careful observation through the study of plant form, photosynthesis, pollination, and the significance of native plants to the Coast Salish people. Language arts grows through longer compositions and detailed U.S. state reports, while mathematics builds fluency with fractions, decimals, and ratios, alongside an introduction to geometric figures and freehand geometry.
The year culminates in a regional Greek Pentathlon, where students compete in events that celebrate grace, beauty, and sportsmanship alongside athletic achievement.

Fifth Grade Highlights
Greek Games
Each spring, Fifth Graders travel to Issaquah for the Greek Games, joining students from other regional Waldorf schools in a friendly competition rooted in ancient tradition. Throughout the year, students train in Movement class to diligently to master the skills required — learning to throw the javelin in a graceful arc and the discus in a precise spiral, guided by the Greek image of writing odes to the gods and casting them skyward as an offering. They compete individually in Greek wrestling, striving to hold the "golden ring" of inner composure throughout the match, and join together for the long jump and running relays. At the two-day games, students compete not just for athletic achievement but to embody the Greek ideals of truth, grace, and beauty.
Mountain School
Each fall, students spend an unforgettable three days and two nights immersed in the mountains with their class, teacher, and parent chaperones. Offered in partnership with the North Cascades Institute, Mountain School introduces fifth graders to the ecosystems, geology, and natural and cultural history of the mountains right in their backyard. Students hike trails and explore watersheds, forests, and wildlife firsthand — engaging in interdisciplinary activities that weave together science, math, art, social studies, and conservation.
Freehand Geometry
5th Grade explores geometric principles through pencil drawings, watercolor paintings, string art, and more!
