Parent Reflections: Backpacking in 6th Grade

There’s nothing quite like watching the sunrise in the heart of the Cascades with a crew of sixth graders—a vivid reminder of the spectacular backyard we all share. For some, it was their very first backpacking trip; for others, these mountains already felt like home. Yet all of us were filled with joy and wonder as we witnessed one of the most breathtaking daybreaks we had ever seen.

I overheard whispers of: “This is so incredible”… “I could sit here all day”… “Bro… can’t believe this is where we live!”

Moments later, the stillness gave way to singing, dancing, and playful frolicking around the peak. This sunrise—and our entire backcountry adventure—left me with a renewed gratitude for our Waldorf community and for the extraordinary education and life experiences we are giving our children. Teachings arrive in many forms throughout our lives, yet the lessons learned in the majesty of Nature may be among the most meaningful, profound, and life-changing of all.
