8th Grade Perspective Drawings
April 23, 2025Our talented 8th Graders have been working hard on their perspective drawing skills! This is a great example of how Waldorf curriculum meets the students in a developmentally appropriate way.
While our young teenagers are deeply engaged in figuring out who they are and eagerly developing their own unique viewpoints, they encounter that which also lies at the heart of perspective drawing: the importance of establishing a point of view. This exercise requires the artist to continuously ask the question, “How would this look from my perspective and why?”
8th Graders confront this question with more abstract thinking, logical reasoning, and complex problem-solving ability than in younger grades, so perspective drawing fits naturally into this stage of cognitive development and curiosity. Building on basic geometric concepts, these drawings also expand the students’ awareness of how math informs our understanding of the world around us, helping them appreciate math as a tool for making sense of everything!
These finished pieces not only demonstrate the 8th Graders’ grasp of concept and technique, but also SHOW us their perspective on the world through color, composition, and personality. This is experiencing learning!
