Music News
Assembly This Friday's Assembly (February 17th) will be presented by the Band and will begin at 12:20pm.
All-State Youth Honor Chorus Two of our students auditioned last fall and were chosen from the hundreds of entries state-wide to participate in the All-State Honor Chorus. Colin Glaze and Anya Grimm - both 6th Graders - will travel to Yakima, WA during mid-winter break where they will rehearse with some of the best 5th and 6th grade singers in Washington State and perform as part of the Washington Music Educators Association Annual Conference (all the music teachers in the state K-University). WOW! Congratulations to Anya and Colin!!! Youth Choir Festival On Saturday, March 24, 2012, sixteen of our 3rd, 4th, 5th and 6th graders will be participating in the regional Youth Choir Festival held at Sehome High School this year. We'll be registering additional students (after our initial "early-bird" registration, but before regular registration closes) next week. If your student would like to participate, please contact Beth Beyers at

or 752-5776.
Coming up at the end of March is our 3rd Annual Music & Art Showcase, an evening of artistic offerings from our very talented student body. It will be held Wednesday, March 28, 2012 at 7:00pm in Alia Hall. This event is intended to showcase in particular those talents that don't find a venue in other school events.
Students who are pursuing arts outside of school are encouraged to participate. This would include, but is not limited to, dance (ballet, ballroom, folk--i.e., Scottish Highland, modern), drama (monologue, dialogue, short scene), recitation (poetry, verse, essay), creative writing (your own poetry, verse essay, short story), story telling, music (piano, guitar, harp, etc.), visual arts (drawing, painting, sculpture, metalwork, glass, wood, fiber art, multimedia, etc.), and more.
This is not meant to be a reiteration of school work, i.e. watercolor paintings or handwork from class, which has other opportunities for sharing and display throughout the school and through assemblies and ensemble concerts. Performance pieces should be limited to 3 minutes. Please contact Beth Beyers (

) with questions. Sign up sheets are posted on the bulletin board outside Alia Hall.
Thank you everyone,
Beth Beyers

Board Report
The Board of Trustees met on Monday February 6th. The Board voted to raise the tuition by 1.5% for the 2012-13 school year for all grades. Supply fees were also raised, by $25, to cover the increased cost of books, supplies, music, etc. However, families who return the re-enrollment forms by the deadline may choose to pay only the 2011-12 level supply fee. The school benefits by receiving accurate enrollment numbers early, as this permits the Board to make early and accurate budget plans.
WHWS will offer two, three, and five-day preschool options next year, in both half-day and all-day configurations, both to provide high quality childcare to local families, and to introduce new families to our beautiful school and community. Although the preschool fees do not cover the cost of the program, the Board believes that the program provides value to current families with younger children, and that it increases enrollment over time, and thus adds to the diversity and richness of our student body and community.
The Board discussed the cultural appropriateness of a fundraising auction for the Waldorf community. Teachers shared how grateful they are to local businesses who donate to our school, and to people who bid on the donations, noting that each bid is a commitment to give to our school. The Board discussed how essential the money raised is - for the rich programs, the beautiful grounds, the wonderful teachers - and preferred to have a gala celebration and auction to significantly raising tuition.
Parents on the Board recalled fondly how fun the auctions have been - seeing teachers in costume, celebrating the arrival of spring, sharing a child-free evening with parents we usually see fleetingly in the halls over the heads of our children. The Board hopes sincerely that every parent will attend, by purchasing a ticket or by volunteering, and that the focus of the evening is a community celebration of our precious Waldorf school.

ATTENTION ALL 7th and 8th Grade Warriors
Join the Bellingham Warriors Lacrosse Team
The spring season has begun for the Bellingham Warriors Lacrosse Team. We have enough players this year for two 7/8 grade teams. So everyone is going to get loads of playing time this year. Sadly, there is no Waldorf representation on the team yet. I'd like to change that.
This is my first year coaching youth lacrosse in Bellingham, so it would be a perfect first year for you to join as a player. Let me warn you, once you start playing, you won't want to stop. There are many new players this year who have never held a lacrosse stick in their hands before. Prior experience is NOT necessary. I will be leading the tier 2 (beginners) squad at games, so I'll look after you out there and get you up to speed quickly.
